Warpage Test for Ceramic Body: Methods & Analysis
Learn how the warpage test is done for ceramic body and slip. Understand the test method and why low warpage is important for fired ceramic products.
Warpage Test for Ceramic Body: Methods & Analysis
Warpage tests can be conducted for clays as well as slips. This test helps to determine the extent of deformation occurring in the material during firing. Low warpage is crucial for producing thinner products and heavier items like one-piece toilets.
Test Method
Various test methods are used to measure the degree of deformation in the clay body. One common method involves casting a 5 mm bar, drying it, and then placing it in a firing kiln with two-point support, as shown in the picture.
The supports are made of refractory material. After firing, the deviation at the center point of the bar is measured to determine the degree of warpage.

ArticleHeat Work with Buller's Rings in Ceramic Kiln Firing
Bullers rings are used for understanding the heat work in the kiln, providing better insights than just monitoring the temperature profile. In a tunnel kiln, the number of Bullers rings used each day depends on factory requirements since they add to production costs.
