Drying Time Test for Glaze in Ceramic Manufacturing
Drying Time Test for Glaze in Ceramic Manufacturing
Test Setup
The drying time test for glaze involves using a metal ring with a 50mm diameter and 3mm thickness, although these dimensions may vary slightly depending on factory requirements.
Test Procedure
In this test, the metal ring is placed on a dried clay piece, and glaze is poured inside the ring. A metal scraper is then used to level the glaze to match the thickness of the ring. The drying process is observed by monitoring the surface shine of the glaze, which is caused by the water content. A timer is started once the glaze is leveled, and the drying time is recorded when the shine on the top layer completely disappears. This is the drying time of the glaze.
Typical Drying Time Range
The drying time of glaze varies from 3–6 minutes.
Impact of Drying Time Variations
Longer Drying Time: This can lead to the glaze running down during spraying on the green body, which would require additional sponging.
Shorter Drying Time: This can cause adhesion problems between the body and the glaze.
